John Westling, Sr., highly respected industry leader, mentor, and devoted family man, died on Monday, January 2, 2017 surrounded by his loving family.

John was an invaluable leader at MPG, bringing his wealth of retailing experience to bear as he crafted new business approaches that aligned our client’s goals with retailer realities. John drew upon his unrivaled knowledge of the mass retail business to build a highly successful Sales Services organization in Northwest Arkansas comprised of the best people he knew. His strategic counsel and business-building capabilities consistently helped MPG clients chart a stronger path forward at Walmart and other key retailers.

Highly respected for his insight and industry expertise, John was equally known for his amazing compassion for others. Throughout his career, John was a teacher, a mentor, a leader.

John joined MPG in 2013 after a distinguished 23-year career at Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. which culminated in his position as EVP of Merchandising, Replenishment, and Category Management. During his long tenure at Walmart, John touched nearly every part of the business and was regarded as someone who could fix almost any problem. As a merchant, he was responsible for almost every category in the store. John was also a pioneer in the Category Management discipline, training Walmart associates around the globe to build best-in-class merchandising capabilities. He joined Walmart after 14 formative years in the grocery business.

Those of us who have had the honor and privilege of knowing and working with John will miss his wisdom and counsel. We will miss him. We have lost “a mountain of a man.”

Please join us in keeping John and his family in your thoughts and prayers.
